Mahogany color can vary a fair amount, from a pale pinkish brown to a darker reddish brown. Color tends to darken with age. Mahogany also exhibits an optical phenomenon known as chatoyancy.
Goncalo Alves, commonly known as Tigerwood, is an incredibly distinctive lumber species. Its golden-brown to deep red-brown hues are interspersed with blackish-brown streaks, creating the tiger-like streaks that give it its name.
Wenge is medium brown, sometimes with a reddish or yellowish hue, with nearly black streaks. Upon application of a wood finish (particularly an oil finish) the wood can become nearly black. However, unlike most other dark hardwoods, the heartwood of wenge can lighten (rather than darken) when exposed to sunlight.
Zebrawood is a distinctive exotic wood from West Africa, known for its bold dark and light stripes that resemble a zebra's pattern. It comes from trees in the Microberlinia genus.
Padauk is an exotic hardwood, known for its vibrant, bright orange or crimson color when freshly milled, which deepens to a rich reddish-brown upon exposure to air and sunlight
